Ökofeldtage - Organic Farming Fair

The Ökofeldtage – a fair for organic farming – was hosted for the first time in Saxony at the Wassergut Canitz GmbH, an organic farm near Leipzig from June 18th-19th. This year’s focus was the connection between organic farming and protection of (drinking) water as the hosting farm is affiliated with the municipal waterworks. Their principle of protecting drinking water through environmentally friendly management of their fields already led to reduced nitrate concentrations in the groundwater.
Birgit and Kaja each went for one day to get insights into latest innovations, current challenges and areas of active research that are relevant for farmers. Topics as nutrient management systems, issues in wheat cultivation and its crude protein content, as well as engaging in conversations with and about organic farming came up throughout. Many of these themes connect to our own research and offer valuable links for future discussion.
Overall, fairs like the Ökofeldtage are a great opportunity to get a sense of what really matters to farmers right now. The challenges they’re facing, what innovations they’re curious about, and where research can step in. They offer a chance to exchange, gather inspiration, and see how theory and practice can connect. Plus, there’s the added bonus of enjoying some excellent food and picking up a few nice goodies along the way.
